What is a Deep Tissue Massage?
If you’re stressed, tense or injured, our experienced massage therapist will use a firm to deep pressure to target the deeper structures of your muscles, to make you feel better.
How does a Deep Tissue Massage Work?
This is a powerful massage designed to alleviate deep-seated tension and muscular stress. Our therapist will use aromatherapy oils and direct pressure to relax the top layer of muscle, in order to reach deeper layers of the muscle tissue.
Allow plenty of time for your treatment; arrive 10 minutes early so there’s time to relax in our waiting area. If it is your first time at The Lagoon you’ll be asked to complete a pre-treatment client questionnaire. Avoid eating a heavy meal or drinking alcohol prior to the treatment.
Our therapist will guide you into The Lagoon and ask some questions to establish your needs. This will help to identify any areas of your body which may require more focus and release during your treatment. They will further tailor your treatment by selecting an essential oil blend to suit your needs.
Your therapist will give you time to undress privately and lie down on our massage table, where you may cover yourself with towels. You will not be completely exposed at any point during your treatment; your therapist will uncover one little bit of you at a time depending on the area she is focusing on.
Our therapist will start the massage using a combination of techniques at a lighter pressure to warm up the muscles where tension has been identified. Then they will use their fingertips, hands, elbows and forearms to deliver a combination of deep gliding pressure and friction techniques to physically break down muscle knots or rigid tissue. You may be asked to breathe deeply as the therapist works on tense areas.
After the massage, you may experience some stiffness, soreness or light bruising.
Drinking water after this treatment is particular important, to flush out the metabolic waste from the tissues.
What are the benefits of a Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep Tissue Massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as muscle pain, injury rehabilitation, and the following conditions:
- Low back pain
- Limited mobility
- Postural problems
- Muscle tension
- Upper back or neck pain
How can I enhance my treatment?
Add Hot Stone or Infrared Light Therapy to this treatment for a small additional fee (£5).
Hot Stone Therapy is a specialist massage that uses smooth, flat, heated basalt positioned in the palms of your hands, along your spine, legs and between the toes. The stones warm and relax your muscles, allowing a deeper pressure to be applied during your massage.
Infrared Therapy involves an infrared lamp being placed over the body for up to 20 minutes during your treatment. It prompts the release of nitric oxide in the body, which enhances blood flow. This brings oxygen and nutrients to injured, aching tissues, resulting in fast relief from pain and inflammation.

If you suffer from osteoporosis, or any condition which may have weakened the bones, it is also advisable to avoid the deeper pressure of this type of massage.
